On 16 September, we were proud to help sponsor the 33rd annual Harriman Cup, an alumni polo match between Yale University and the University of Virginia. This year, Yale was victorious, and Virginia's Nicholas Barry won MVP. The match, held annually since 1985, takes place in the serene Bethpage Polo Grounds on Long Island, and serves to benefit the sport of polo, specifically the collegiate level programs at Yale and UVA. The cup derives its name from William Averell Harriman, a Yale grad and avid polo player that served as governor of New York from 1955-1958. Even after more than three decades, the match draws in hundreds of alumni, friends, and families, most of whom are decked out in elaborate hats and outfits, eager to support their given team. In addition to a spirited polo match, the all-day event features an awards ceremony for players and attendees, who competitively contest for the Best Hat, Best Dog, Best Outfit, and Best Tailgate titles. Concluding with a dance party, the Harriman Cup brings together both schools, regardless of the given year’s champion.
